Frequently Asked Questions

How does acupuncture work?

  • Acupuncture is a treatment method by insertion of very fine, brand new medical grade needles into predefined energetic points in the body to open the network of energy channels that run throughout your body, facilitate the free flow circulation of energy and blood to remove obstructions and blockages, reverse the existing imbalances by guiding the energy to where it needs to go, and ultimately restore your entire system back to a healthy balance and efficient functioning.

What can acupuncture treat?

  • Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is a complete system of healing which addresses the entire human body and all conditions at all levels body, emotion, mind, and spirit. Acupuncture is not just for stress and back pain like the way it was popularized by the media. The more informed you are about the depth and healing wisdom of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, the more empowered you become by having the right knowledge, awareness, and a powerful ally that supports every aspect of your health naturally and safely throughout your life.

Where in the body are the needles inserted?

  • Over 1,000 energetic points were identified in the human body throughout the long history and development of acupuncture. The selection of acupuncture points for treatment depends on the individual diagnosis and can be on the head, face, ears, trunk, arms, legs, hands, feet, front, back, or sides of the body.

Are our needles brand new?

  • We totally understand your concern about needle safety. At our clinic we use only brand new, individually sealed and packaged, sterile medical grade disposable needles. Each needle is used for one insertion only and we never reuse needle after an initial insertion. We strictly comply to federal and state health regulations for your safety and the safety of all our patients. Upon removal, all used needles are deposited in an industry standard sharp container and to be disposed by our professional biohazard waste disposal service.

Are the needles medicated?

  • Our needles do not have any medicated coating or filling. The needles are plain surgical grade stainless steel, nothing more, nothing less.

How do we dispose our used needles?

  • By law, contaminated needles cannot be recycled and must be destroyed by a state regulated and licensed professional disposal service. Our clinic contracts a Texas state licensed professional biohazard wastes disposal service to take care of our used needles.

Does acupuncture hurt?

  • The best answer to this question is that it depends on the individual. Everyone responds differently to stimuli and has different pain threshold. The acupuncture needles are extremely fine. Some points are more sensitive than others depending on the areas of the body. However, most points are tolerable. Our acupuncturist is ready to coach and assist patient should any discomfort arise. Rest assured that you are not alone in this process. We care about our patients and we do our best to ensure a comfortable and healing experience for all patients at our clinic.

How many treatment sessions are required?

  • This depends on the nature and severity of the condition. The standard treatment protocol at our clinic is 6 sessions. After the initial course of treatment, we recommend a maintenance program if necessary. Very severe or acute conditions typically require 12 sessions in the initial phase and followed by a maintenance program.

When can patient expect to see improvement?

  • Everyone responds differently to a treatment depending on the nature and severity of the condition being treated, other pre-existing conditions that can have bearing on the recuperative power of the individual, and patient's compliance to the treatment regimen. There is not one standard gauge that measures all people equally. Based on the experiences at our clinic, the majority of patients feel improvement within the week of the first treatment. The acupuncture effects are cumulative, therefore the likelihood of increasing improvement is expected as patient goes through the course of treatment and stays firmly with the treatment plan.

Can children receive acupuncture?

  • In general, children as well as infants can receive acupuncture. However, our clinic does not administer acupuncture to children younger than 12 years of age unless absolutely necessary. We prefer herbs as the primary method of treatment for children less than 12.

What about herbs?

  • Most treatment protocol at our clinic include herbal prescriptions. For many millennia, herbs have been an important and indispensable component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Some patients have concerns about taking herbs concurrently with their prescription medications. Our patients' experiences have shown that so far our herbs are not interfering with patients' medications and we did not receive any reports of adverse drug interactions. In prescribing herbs we take care, in the best of our ability, to consider patients' conditions and the current medications that they are taking to prevent any potential drug interaction. If any concerns arise, we can adjust the dosage or formula to suit patient's needs.

Must a patient have faith for it to work?

  • Chinese medicine is a tried and true science that has been in use for 5,000 years. Technically, the needles and herbs still perform their functions even without faith. However, our clinical experience has shown that patients who keep an open and receptive mind heal faster and more effectively than the skeptical patients.
