Acupuncture

Time-tested, clinically proven for over 3,000 years. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are a complete system of healing which address all conditions of the human body and all levels body, emotion, mind, spirit.

How acupuncture works

Acupuncture, originated in China, is a treatment method within the Chinese medicine system which works on the meridian system of the human body and is based on the energetic principles which govern all aspects of our bodies' makeup and physiological functions. Acupuncture is administered by inserting very fine, brand new surgical grade needles into predefined energetic points in the body. Throughout the long history and development of acupuncture, more than 1,000 micro energetic vortexes have been identified to exist in the human body.

Once the needles are inserted into the energetic points, they open the network of energy channels that run throughout your body, facilitate the circulation of energy and blood to remove obstructions and blockages, reverse the existing imbalances by guiding the energy to where it needs to go, and ultimately restore your body back to a healthy balance and efficient functioning.

After the needles are inserted, they are retained in the body for thirty minutes to do the work. At the end of a thirty minute session, the energy circulation would have completed one full cycle throughout your entire system.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture looks scary but it really is not. Some point locations are more sensitive than others depending on the areas of the body, however most needles are inserted without causing any discomfort to our patients. Any uncomfortable sensation would be felt only at the initial insertion of needle and goes away after a few seconds. The needle sensation can feel like a pinch or an ant bite, a lot of times you don't even feel the needle at all. Once all needles are inserted, you should feel comfortable and relaxed for the entire duration of the treatment. Rest assured that you're not alone in this process. Our acupuncturist is ready to assist you should any discomfort arise.

What does acupuncture feel like

In an acupuncture session, you may experience various energetic sensations while the needles are retained and it is normal. Some of the common energetic effects are momentary pain, itch, numbness, heavy sensation of the body, your body may feel stuck or pinned to the treatment table or you feel like you're sinking into the table, involuntary movement of limbs, brain activities slow down to alpha, theta, or even delta level, interdimensional traveling, spiritual or mystical experiences, non-ordinary psychic states or out of body experience.

Many patients go into a very deep sleep during an acupuncture treatment. According to research, the level of rejuvenation that a person gets from a 30-minute session of acupuncture is equivalent to a good solid eight hours of sleep!

About the needles

Where are needles inserted

  • The selection of acupuncture points for a treatment depends on the conditions. The point locations can be on the head, face, ears, trunk, arms, legs, hands, feet, front, back, or sides of the body.

Are the needles brand new

  • We totally understand your concern about needle safety. At our clinic we use only brand new, individually sealed and packaged, sterile surgical grade disposable needles. We never reuse needles. Each needle is used for only one insertion. We comply strictly to federal and state health regulations for your safety and the safety of all our patients.

  • Upon removal, all used needles are deposited in an industry standard sharp container and to be disposed by our professional biohazard waste disposal service.

Are the needles medicated

  • Our acupuncture needles are not medicated in any way, no medicated coating or filling. The needles are surgical grade stainless steel, nothing more, nothing less.

The treatment

How many sessions are required

  • This depends on the severity of the condition. The standard treatment protocol at our clinic is six sessions. After the initial course of treatment, we recommend a maintenance program if necessary. Severe conditions typically require twelve sessions in the initial phase and followed by a maintenance program.

When can you see improvement

  • Everyone responds differently to a treatment depending on the nature and severity of the condition being treated, pre-existing conditions, and patient's compliance. There is not one standard gauge that measures all people equally. Based on our clinical experience, the majority of patients feel improvement within the week of the first treatment.  Acupuncture effects are cumulative, thus the likelihood of progressing improvement is expected as patient goes through the course of treatment and stays firmly with the treatment plan.

Can children have acupuncture
  • Acupuncture is safe for everyone including adults, seniors, and children. However, our clinic does not administer acupuncture to children under 12 years old because of their difficulty with lying still for an extended period of time and to prevent creating psychological trauma for them relating to needles. Herbs and/or Reiki are the preferred modalities.
