Acupuncture for anger management
Updated: Aug 28
Anger is one of the most basic human emotions and physiological responses. Anger can be a healthy expression if it's well-managed and well-directed toward a positive and transformative goal. However, impulsive and uncontrolled anger is a destruction to one's life. Anger destroys health, breaks up families and relationships, traumatizes loved ones, jeopardizes work relationships and jobs, perpetuates negativity and unhappiness in one's life. Unmanaged, chronic anger can erode one's self-esteem, breeds self-denigration and deep guilt.
According to a 2026 statistic review of anger management in the United States Anger Management in America 2026: A Growing Public Health Concern
"Anger is one of the most primal and universal human emotions — and in 2026, it has become one of the most urgent mental health challenges in the United States. From road rage incidents to workplace outbursts, domestic violence to online aggression, unmanaged anger is showing up with greater frequency, greater intensity, and more devastating consequences than at any point in recent memory. According to data cited by Gallup, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Crown Counseling, between 7% and 11% of American adults experience clinically significant anger problems — meaning their anger is intense, persistent, and actively damaging their relationships, work performance, and physical health. Yet fewer than 15% of those affected have ever sought professional help, creating a massive gap between the scale of the problem and the scale of the response."
According to a recent study supported by the National Institutes of Health, frequent anger is linked to increased risk of heart disease.
Anger is a health disorder according to acupuncture healing principles
Acupuncture healing principles regard anger as neither a personality trait nor a reflection of one's character but a physiological imbalance which can be treated effectively and naturally with acupuncture. Acupuncture principles attribute anger as a consequence of the following common physiological causes:
Chronic and/or acute stress leading to the stagnation of energy in many areas of the body especially the liver and its energy pathway.
Excessive accumulation of internal heat. Some common causes of excessive internal heat are:
Yin deficiency imbalance such as hormonal decline in menopause, excessive loss of blood which is common with heavy menstruation and childbirth, chemo/radiation therapy.
Certain medications especially those with steroids tend to produce excessive heat in the body and aggression.
Excessive alcohol consumption, long-term smoking, and other drug use.
Energy and blood stagnation around menstrual period, hence anger is a common pre-menstrual symptom.
Healing principles of acupuncture for anger management
Acupuncture treats anger by opening the major energy system of the body and the energy channels that have direct connections to anger with emphasis on the liver and gallbladder channels, regulate energy flow and disperse blockages, drain excess heat from the body, and ground the energy system.
The two essential acupuncture treatment principles for releasing anger are:
Clear blockages and regulate energy flow
People with chronic anger have a lot of energy blockages connected to the liver channel, in acupuncture we call it liver qi stagnation. Liver is the frontline organ to be impacted by stress whether physical, emotional, or mental. The accumulation of any forms of stress causes congestions in the energy system, inhibits the movement of energy, and eventually causes the built-up pressure to explode in anger or rage. In order to control anger, energy must be able to flow properly throughout the energy system. Acupuncture has proven to be a super regulator of energy. There are specific points in the body where we apply acupuncture to open the meridians, facilitate energy flow and rebalance the energy system. The primary energy channels to be treated are the liver and gallbladder channels. Consequently, congestions in the body disperse and the volatile energy is quickly subdued.
Drain excess heat
Excessive body heat is always present in all anger cases. Think about water, which can boil only when heat is present. This same principle applies to our internal environment that when excessive heat is present in the body, it can make "one's blood boil". Therefore, draining heat is critically important to extinguish the fire of anger and acupuncture is a powerful method to achieve this end. There are energetic points in our body that act like exhaust valves. The acupuncture needles are applied to these points to stimulate the opening of "the valves" and through them excess heat and pressure drain out of the body. This is why acupuncture is phenomenal in its effectiveness and quick acting ability, making it an indispensable modality for treating the explosive type of anger.
The effects of acupuncture strongly ground the energy system, thus one reacts much less to people and situations. The usual hair-trigger reactions are replaced by a detached observation. Our patients reported that they do not feel provoked - what other people say or do tend to glide off as if they have a Teflon surface. They also experienced a unique sense of detachment, the ability to mentally observe a situation or provocation without an emotional or physical response.
Additional tips to manage anger:
Exercise. Get into a good, consistent workout regimen to release the stress. Exercise at least three days a week. Even just a thirty-minute walk can help tremendously to move one's energy.
Meditate. Daily meditation has a strong grounding effect on the energy system and calms agitations. Meditation is really a simple thing to do and when you stay with it for a period of time, you will experience the benefits.
Reduce meat consumption. Meat can strongly stimulate aggressive energy. If a person has excessive anger, it's best to eliminate meat from the diet or at least significantly reduce the consumption, especially red meat.
Reduce consumption of spicy foods. Many foods are hot in nature such as chili peppers, culinary spices and will produce a lot of heat when they enter the body. Heat provokes anger, therefore eliminate spicy foods. Eat more cooling foods such as fruits and vegetables.
Eliminate alcohol. Alcohol increases aggression. Avoid alcohol completely if one has out-of-control anger.
Get counseling. It's very beneficial to have counseling as part of an anger management program. Although counseling by itself may not be sufficient to control anger, it works well in conjunction with acupuncture to produce effective results.
